Preparing for an Interview

Research the company

Find out as much as you can about the job and the company. It will help you prepare to answer interview questions and to ask the interviewer relevant questions about the company. Research is easily done by looking at their website and understanding their company ethos and mission statement.

Plan your journey

Being late to an interview is never acceptable. Plan your route. Do a trial run to see how long it actually takes. Allow plenty of time to allow for delays.

Personal hygiene

Grooming is important – ensure you are showered and hair and nails are clean and tidy. Use deodorant but avoid strong perfumes and aftershaves. Check your breath – smoking immediately before an interview could mean the smell lingers on your breath and clothes.

Dress smartly

Whilst a suit may not be necessary for every environment, wearing something professional and formal shows you are serious about the job. Ensure your clothes are clean and ironed. Simple colours and styles are preferable. Check your shoes are polished.

Remember that whilst most interviews are face to face employers can also use other forms:

Telephone/Video

Some employers may use an initial telephone or video interview to eliminate unsuitable candidates. Preparation for these are still important.

Assessment centres

These can be used by larger employers to compare the performance of several candidates in a range of situations. They typically involve tasks such as presentations, group work, written tests and in-tray exercises. They can last up to one full working day.
